Vegetables are an important part of a healthy and balanced diet. Whether cooked or raw, vegetables are still equally healthy to eat. Even so, raw foods are usually susceptible to contamination, and vegetables are no exception. Raw vegetables are susceptible to contamination by bacteria which can cause food poisoning.

Cooking food until completely cooked is the most perfect way to prevent food poisoning. The reason is, viruses and bacteria will usually die at hot temperatures.

Raw vegetables are usually often processed into delicious salads. As you know, salad is one of the healthy and low-calorie foods. So, actually raw vegetables are still healthy, as long as they are processed and cleaned properly to avoid bacterial contamination.

Raw vegetables that are not cleaned properly are at high risk of being contaminated with harmful bacteria, such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. Apart from washing vegetables thoroughly, there are several steps you need to pay attention to before consuming raw vegetables, for example:

  • Choose vegetables that are still beautiful and avoid choosing those that have been bruised or damaged.
  • Keep vegetables cold by choosing products stored in the refrigerator or stored on ice.
  • Separate vegetables from raw meat, poultry, and seafood in shopping baskets and in grocery bags.
  • Wash hands, kitchen tools, and food preparation surfaces, including cutting boards and worktops, before & after preparing grains and vegetables.
  • Clean vegetables before eating, chopping, or cooking.
  • Wash or scrub vegetables using running water.
  • Avoid washing vegetables using soap or detergent.
  • Cut off damaged or bruised areas before eating.
  • Separate vegetables from raw foods of animal origin, such as meat, poultry and seafood.
  • Refrigerate vegetables within two hours of cutting or peeling them to five degrees Celsius or cooler in a clean container.

This group of individuals is actually less advised to eat raw vegetables. For this group of individuals, it is best to eat vegetables, grains, and other foods that are thoroughly cooked to prevent food poisoning.
